GENERAL
Each generating set consists of an Avon-powered gas turbine driving AJC generator and exciter through a speed reducing gear-box supplying 10.3 MW base, 16 MW peak (depending upon ambient temperature) at 13.8Kv 60Hz and is designed for standing without an external AlC supply.
The complete installation is mounted on a main and an auxiliary trailer designed for transporting all the necessary equipment by road to any site where it is desired to provide an additional or emergency mains power supply. The plant controls are located in a control room at the front and of the auxiliary trailer.
The gas generator is a liquid fueled Rolls-Royce Avon maxi type 1533-10LL.
For starting the gas generator is rotated by a 120 volt D/C motor enclosed within the intake bub fairing. The starter drive incorporates a self-engaging ratchet mechanism.
The power turbine is a single stage unit driven by Avon gas generator exhaust gases.
Power turbine exhaust gases pass through an exhaust duct and silencer to an exhaust stack which discharges the gases to atmosphere. A splitter type silencer reduces exhaust noise to an acceptable level.
The speed-reducing gearbox is driven by the power turbine through a shaft with flexible couplings. The gear unit is suitable for full continuous running and can with stand 100/11 overloads for abort periods. It uses single helical, inviolate gears supported by plain white metal bearings.
The A!C generator is a horizontal salient pole, brush less machine. Excitation is by a revolving armature brush less generator complete with rotating rectifiers and a pilot exciter integral with the main exciter. The generator is totally enclosed and cooled by a closed air system.
The gas turbine is a fuel-controlled engine, so that the constant conditions of load and ambient atmospheric quantities, engine speed is directly related to the amount of fuel supplied to the gas generator. A change in load requires a related change in fuel supply to maintain a constant output speed and consequently, a constant A!C frequency. The system embodies an electronic governor unit, which monitors critical performance quantities.

GAS TURBINES
The purpose of the Governor Control system is to regulate the flow of fuel into the gas turbine from minimum engine running conditions to full load within the boundary of safe working conditions. Plant sequencing signals and gas turbine signals are 1herefore processed, and suitably used 10 operate fuel control valves in the fuel valve packages. Valves include in these packages also control start-up and s1op functions such as shut-off valves and ignition systems.
The control system is designed as an automatic governor system, to provide stable operation of the generator set as a whole. It is also designed to achieve long life and reliable operation with the minimum of servicing and maintenance.
Normal sequencing of the start, run and shutdown cycles is carried out by the auto- sequencing control system. When all essential supplies are available the start is initiated by the operator processing a single button on the local control panel. The starter motor accelerates the gas generator and after a suitable purge period, fuel is introduced and ignited, idling speed is then attained. Fuel output is increased and the gas generator accelerates at a controlled rate, the maximum fuel schedule being limited as a function of compressor discharge pressure (p2). At 90% synchronous speed the auto-synchronizer takes control, and raises the set to synchronous speed. Incoming volts and frequency are matched with running volts and frequency. V.11en these are within limits, the circuit breaker is closed and a nominal lO% load is applied for stability purposes. The set can now be loaded as required.
In The Operating condition the trailers are joined together so that the gas efflux of the gas generator, which is situated at the rear of the auxiliary trailer, is delivered to drive the power turbine, which is at the front of the main trailer. Before operating the set, the trailers are jacked off their road wheels, linked together by buffers and a connecting seal is interposed between the rear of the auxiliary trailer and the front of the main trailer.
The trailer supper structure, consisting of air intake and exhaust filters and silencers, is removable for transportation.

Fuel Supply System
Fuel (Diesel) is supplied from tanks or tankers to the fuel forwarding package then pumped from the forwarding package to the -Avon fuel pump which delivers it at high pressure to the burners the Avon pump is of the multi piston variable angle swash plate type, which is controlled by a servo piston activated servo pressure supplied from the P2 and servo control unit.
Fuel For Warding Package.
The package comprises AC and DC motor driven fuel pumps, mounted in parallel, a duplex & filter and associated pipe work and valves.
The duplex filter incorporates a change over valve the valve thus permits the changing of a filter while the set is running. Fuel is pumped to the A VON fuel pump via filter, flow meter and pressure regulator low-pressure fuel cock and surge/accW11ulation tank. The accumulator cushions pressure surges upon closure of the high pressure (H.P.) fuel cock and also caters for thermal expansion.
Automatic Protection Facilities
Pressure senses are incorporates with the fuel system. If pressure drop below pre-determined setting. Alarm will come and initiate unit shut down. AC pumps fails and delivery pressure low DC pump will starts.
Bleeding Air
Bleed the air from the pumps and A von run either the AC or DC fuel pump.
