As shown on the accompanying Sectional Arrangement Drawing
R277/621 the turbine is of the two cylinder impulse-reaction type.
The
machine comprises an H.P. cylinder having one Curtis stage and 17 impulse stages
and double flow L.P. cylinder having a first stage of the impulse type and five
reaction stages in each flow. The H.P. cylinder is so arranged that the
steam flow is away from the rest of the turbine and alternator. By tending
to balance the thrusts, the arrangement relieves the load on the single thrust
bearing provided to control the axial flow of the whole turbo-alternator
unit.
The H.P. and all but the last stage of the L.P. blades are mounted
in grooves in the forged steel rotors. The final stage of the L.P. has, for each
flow, a forged steel disc which is shrunk and keyed on to the shaft. The
last row L.P. blades are of the side entry type in which each root is in a
separate groove cut across the disc head.
The nozzles of the H.P. turbine
are carried in built up type diaphragms. Cast iron diaphragms are provided
to carry the first stage impulse nozzle and the final stage fixed blading in the
L.P. cylinder.
Steam packed labyrinth glands are provided for each
cylinder.
